What to Look For on the Label
Flip the bottle over. It should say 0.9% sodium chloride, sometimes with purified water listed alongside it, and that's it. No added moisturizers, no antibacterial ingredients, no fragrance. The simpler the label, the better it is for a healing piercing.

What Not to Grab By Mistake
Contact lens saline, nasal spray, and eye drops all sound similar but aren't made for wound care and shouldn't go anywhere near a fresh piercing. Skip alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, and tea tree oil too. They used to be common advice, but they're actually too harsh, they dry out the tissue and can slow healing down instead of helping it.
Don't Mix Your Own
Homemade saltwater used to be standard advice. It's not anymore. Piercers have moved away from recommending it because it's incredibly easy to get the ratio wrong, and too much salt actually dries out and irritates the piercing rather than helping it heal. A store bought sterile wound wash is formulated to the exact right concentration every time, which a kitchen measuring spoon just can't guarantee.
How to Actually Use It
Spray it directly on the piercing, or for spots that are hard to reach, soak a clean gauze pad and hold it against the area for a few minutes. Either way, follow up with a quick rinse of plain water afterward to clear away any residue. Once or twice a day is plenty, more than that can actually irritate healthy tissue.
Good aftercare and good jewelry go hand in hand. Even the right saline routine works better paired with implant grade titanium or nickel free gold, since you're not fighting irritation from the metal while you're also trying to keep things clean.
